Energy is a
basic requirement for all the activities. According to physics energy is the
basic quantity needed to be transferred to object in order to do work. Work
cannot be performed without energy.
There are
different forms of energy which are used for different purposes, but in this
modern world the electrical energy is most widely used than any other form of
energy.
Electrical
energy has such a wide range of applications in today’s world that it’s per
capita consumption is regarded as an index of a country’s development.
As electric energy
is needed for many tasks, at different places there must be an efficient
network to transfer the energy from one place to other.
There are
many ways to transfer electrical energy, but most often copper cables with insulation
or other conducting metal cables are used to transfer electrical energy.
Recently a
new way has been found to transfer electricity. This way does not require
cables to transfer electricity.

WIRELESS ENERGY
TRANSMISSION (WET)
Also called
electromagnetic power transfer involves transfer of electricity without any
physical conductor.
The
electricity is transmitted in the form of electro-magnetic waves produced by
the transmitter and received by the receiver device. Basically the transmitter
and the receiver devices are electro-magnetic devices used to transmit the
energy.
Wireless energy
transmission has a wide range of applications, it is used in many devices such
as wireless mobile chargers, wireless CFL’s and also to power some space
satellites (backup energy).
WIRELESS MOBILE CHARGER
Another
important use of wireless energy transmission is to transmit electricity
underwater, as laying cables underwater can be dangerous (leakage of current)
wireless energy transmission is used to transmit electricity under water
(electro-magnetic waves).
PRINCIPLE
Wireless
energy transmission works on the principle of electro-magnetism.
Electro-magnetism is a branch of physics that deal with the relation of
magnetism and electrically charged particles.
HOW IT
WORKS????
The
transmitter converts the voltage source into high frequency alternating current
(AC), the high frequency alternating current induces a magnetic field.
Alternating
current = the current which changes direction after equal interval of time.
As the
current changes its direction after equal interval of time the direction of
magnetic field also changes.
When the
receiver comes into the vicinity of the magnetic field (which changes direction
continuously) a current is induced in it.
One might
wonder how the idea of wireless transmission of energy must have evolved. It
was through the effort of the great scientist NIKOLA TESLA.
NIKOLA TESLA
[COLORADO SPRINGS]
Nikola tesla
had set up an experiment in Colorado to test wireless transmission of
electricity. He built wardenclyffe tower also known as tesla tower to transmit
energy.
Basically
tesla coil has two circuits separated (each with it’s own capacitors) by a
spark gap. It needs a high voltage source which is obtained through a
transformer.
The primary coil acts as a sponge and soaks charge, when the capacitors build enough charge the charge break through the air resistance in the spark gap. The current that flows out of capacitor induces magnetic field.
In his
experiment he built a power station with tesla tower at it’s center and several
light bulbs around it spread in the area of 100 feet (around the station).

This
initiative by NIKOLA TESLA sparked off the research for wireless transmission
of energy.
ADVANTAGES
OF WET
COST OF
CABLE: as the electricity is transmitted wirelessly the cost of cables is
reduced and the transmission of energy is made commercially viable.
SPACE: as cables need a lot of place to be laid
wireless transmission reduces space for operation.
DISTANCE:
magnetic waves can be transmitted to a large distance using resonance and
induction process.
MULTIPLE
DEVICES: wireless transmission can be used to charge multiple devices at a
time.
DISADVANTAGES
OF WET
COST OF
CONSTRUCTION: The construction cost of initial setup of wireless energy
transmission is very high.
HIGH
FREQUENCY: it requires a high frequency supply in order to be efficient and
effective.
ENERGY
WASTAGE: Some amount of energy is wasted in the form of heat and weak
electro-magnetic waves.
This topic
is currently under research to obtain maximum energy output and transmit energy
to larger distances.
Wireless
transmission is highly efficient in shorter range, but as the distance between
the transmitter and the receiver increases it becomes less efficient and
requires focusing devices.
Resonant
circuits are used to increase efficiency of wireless energy transmission
systems at large distances
