Li-Fi (transmitting data through visible light)


WHAT IS DATA????

In today’s cyber world most of the information is transmitted and preserved in the digital form. Computers are extensively used to store information.

In this world of information and technology new information is constantly needed to be transmitted to other places, thus transmission of data has a lot of importance in the world of computers.

Information stored in the digital form is known as data. As a lot of data is to be transmitted over long distances, electronic devices are used to transmit data digitally.

Many ways have been devised to transmit data digitally, these way include both wire-less and wire (including) networks.

Most often it is convenient to transmit data wirelessly as it reduces the cost of cables and can transmit data to several devices simultaneously.

Most of you must have been familiar with Wi-Fi that transmits data through radio waves but recently a new way has been found to transmit data wirelessly.

Li-Fi (light fidelity)

Li-Fi is a wireless networking system that transmits data in the form of visible light. In a Li-Fi system LED bulbs (light emitting diodes) are used to transmit data optically.

A circuit converts the digital data into signals that control LED bulbs and then the data is converted into light form by the bulbs.

As light does not needs any medium to travel, Li-Fi can transmit data even in absence of any propagating medium (on the places such as moon).


Typically a practical Li-Fi has 3 basic parts

1 processing circuits

2 photo emitter (LED bulbs)

3 photo receivers

HOW Li-Fi WORKS?????

The processing circuits transform the digital data into into electric signals that control the photo emitter (LED bulbs).

Then the data is transmitted through the LED bulbs in form of the visible light. The data is encoded into visible light by changing the flickering rate of the LED bulbs.

On LED is encoded as 1 and off LED is encoded as 0 thus data is transmitted in binary form.

The silicon photo diode receiver detects light waves and again transforms it into digital form for use and storage.


ADVANTAGES OF Li-Fi

As the propagation speed of light is very high (300000000 m/s), data can be transmitted with a great speed (100 gb/s).

Data can be transmitted to a wider section of devices as light sources are present at many places or can be arranged at lower cost.

A high security can be ensured, as light cannot pass opaque objects Li-Fi network is available to the users in confined area.


DISADVANTAGES OF Li-Fi

As light cannot pass opaque objects, Li-Fi has a limited and short range.
It is suitable for short distances but as distances increase light begins to scatter which leads to loss of data.

As light travels in straight in line it is often difficult to set perfect locations for emitter and receiver.

The components of Li-Fi are often very expensive and are rarely available (as it is still under research).

APPLICATIONS
In almost all the fields transmission of data has a great importance thus Li-Fi can be extensively used to transmit data in various fields such as education, traffic management, information and technology and medical technology.

As light also travels under water Li-Fi is used for underwater applications of data transmitting.


CREATING A BASIC Li-Fi SYSTEM

Materials required
AUX cable, LED, a 9 V battery, a speaker, 220 ohm resistor and a solar panel.

Procedure
1 cut the AUX cable into two parts and remove some part of rubber insulation from both the pieces (let the pieces be l1,l2).

2 the AUX cable contains 4 basic wires inside the insulation: right speaker wire, left speaker wire, ground wire and the audio wire.

3 solder the left speaker wire and right speaker wire of both the pieces l1 and l2 of AUX cable (let this soldered cables be C1,C2).

4 cut ground wire from l1. Now solder the C1 to the positive terminal of the solar panel and ground wire to negative terminal.

5 now solder the C2 of l2 to a 9V battery connector which is connected to a 220 ohm resistor, LED bulb and ground wire to make a complete circuit.

6 now connect battery and connect speaker to l1 and mobile to l2 and let the light from LED fall on solar panel and play the song.
